i've defended rms' pedantry
i believe in free software
i believe copyleft is essential
i believe AGPL3 is the best license

i disagree with those who say "software freedom isn't important these days" or that ease of use is more important

but every time RMS makes the news he undermines the FSF and the free software movement 🤦‍♂️

i just e-mailed them to discontinue my recurring donation and told them why

gonna increase my donation to software freedom conservancy instead

re: cancelling my FSF donation

i don't have a demand as concrete as "cancel stallman"

i just think that he's doing more harm than good, they aren't even acknowledging the problem, and donating now makes me feel guilty and uncomfortable

but what exactly *do* i want the FSF to do about RMS? i've been struggling with the question.

thankfully before i could even articulate this discomfort for myself, mjg59 is there with a spot-on analysis and direction for a solution

@pho4cexa So that's the reason.

While i don't want to give RMS the reason, because he said some imprudent things (such as harem and some of his conclusions) if you don't allow people to express their opinions even if those contradicts the way that laws see and judge an act of crime, you are comdeming the free software community to a censorship, and the community it's already very us centralized.

Also, the best argument that i found in the blog is an assumption that the free software community is protecting RMS just because he is an important member of the movement, she is creating a narrative of a powerfull man that is opressing everyone, and he, for sure, must be cancelled and dethroned.

@lorabe @pho4cexa on the free speech point: letting stuff like this slide makes our spaces less welcoming esp. to women, and ends up having a silencing effect on them.

It would be unreflective to think that this kind of outcry isn't intended as a silencing mechanism, so yes, there's some pressure on RMS's speech.

But there's a conflict here, and so by pushing the speech angle for him, you're actually taking a side, not just making a meta point about discourse.

@lorabe @pho4cexa

Nobody's taking about passing laws here, but the legal right to free speech rights does not mean there are no social consequences.

@zenhack @pho4cexa at this point we are not talking about the legal consecuences, but the social consecuences.

For one part, i agree this doesn't help women to feel comfortable in the free software comnunity wich is bad, in my opinion RMS is just a person that lacks social perception, and as such he doesn't care about modern things like "microaggresions". He doesn't measure his words in a world with very sensitive people who only cares about that.

But that is far away from being a pedophile or a misandric person, such alegations are really exagerated in my opinion. Greetings.

@lorabe @zenhack @pho4cexa >rms has said some of these things almost 14 years ago
>suddenly pretend to care after vice makes article

Hes a fucking autist who eats shit off his foot in public, stop putting your noise in communities you never paid attention to in the first place. None of this shit is surprising, for fucks sake people get a better hobby than group planned outrage.

@lorabe @pho4cexa I don't think there's sufficient evidence to call him a pedophile. Calling him an apologist for pedophilia is far from ridiculous though -- in the past he's been on record as claiming there's such a thing as consensual pedophilia.

If this were an isolated incident, I might be inclined to believe it was just him getting overly hung up on terminology as usual. But he has a long history of behavior that entrenches the systemic inequalities in tech.

@lorabe @pho4cexa ultimately, all I personally am pushing for is that the fsf hold him to the same standard of behavior as it claims to expect from everyone else. The annual libre planet conference in Boston has safe space policies, anti harassment policies etc. But some years he's not only violated the code of conduct, he's been the only one to do so. Yet he keeps getting to give keynotes. Anyone else would have been banned by now.

RMS is for sure a weirdo, and probably struggling with some mental disability. If you try to have him removed is that not being "ableist"?

Yeah there was a time when a figurehead's fuckups didn't matter because their work was given much more importance, but it's almost 50 years later and the world has changed. While I get his intentions and viewpoint (he seems to still believe his friend's sexual interactions with minors were consensual), RMS now hurts the Free Software movement more than he helps. He just doesn't get it. 🤦‍♂️

Why couldn't he just keep his mouth shut? :blobugh:

It's time for him to step down.

I honestly dont care about RMS or FSF either way, amd he should have been gone 10 years ago, if not more, but...
"he seems to still believe his friend's sexual interactions with minors were consensual"
Where do people get this? The email says the exact opposite. The fact Vice is reporting this is just yet another reason why I'm absolutely disgusted with their mere existence.
