I recently learned about i3's scratchpad. You have to configure the key shortcuts yourself as there are no defaults, but it's really cool. I use it to put my music player most of the time

Once I found tdrop while looking for a scratchpad for bspwm, I never looked back. Even in i3. https://github.com/noctuid/tdrop
But the built-in one is awesome too.
